Useful information for tourist travelling to Budapest
Useful information
Practical information and facts for your visit to Budapest!
TAXI
Be aware that some of the city’s taxi drivers are clever, not only in your benefit... Ask the hotel or restaurant to order a taxi for you or call yourself. Look after how much money you deliver to the driver and what kind of currency you get back. From 2014 all taxies should be yellow and all taxies should follow a fixed tariff. More over all of them should accept creditcard payment and give you a valid receipt.
However this is a general rule - there is some cabs with a simple “taxi sign” and which clearly are not connected with any offical taxi company. These are usally NOT recommended as overcharging and hustling seems to be thier general business policy.

Hungarian doctors are known for their good medical expertise, and you are usually in good hands if something were to happen. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid with passport at public hospitals. If you need medical support gotobudapest.com have special deals with an English speaking private medical center which is open 24/7, and has several different specialists with high competence. Potential treatments can be covered by your travel insurance and as a registered travel agency we can attest to your stay, together with the medical center.
TIP
TIP Its normal to be generous when tipping. One normally gives between 10-20% if one is happy with the service, whether it is at a restaurant, spa or hairdresser.
Some places choose to include the tip in the bill, and of course it is not expected to add additional tipping from the guest side.

CRIME
Use common sense and you will be safe! Avoid dark alleys, counting money on the street or subway, and outparts of the city/bad areas after dark. Pocket theft usually happens on the metro, tram or in the shopping streets. If a crime happens to you, you can call this English speaking hotline: +36 1 438 8080.
WATER
It is not disadvantageous to drink water from the tap, but we recommend bottled water because it is cheap and good. Pink top means still water and blue top means sparkling water.
